When Ruger and Hornady jointly introduced the .375 Ruger in 2007, the big-bore community gave it a respectful nod and then largely went back to their .375 H&Hs. That was a mistake. The .375 Ruger is a legitimately superior cartridge from an engineering standpoint — it matches or exceeds .375 H&H Magnum velocities from a standard .30-06-length action, runs on a standard magnum bolt face, and produces no meaningful accuracy disadvantage. For handloaders, it's an efficient, accurate, and deeply satisfying cartridge to work with.
The Case for the .375 Ruger
The .375 Ruger uses a rebated rim design and a straight-wall case with a modest 0.030-inch body taper — much less than the .375 H&H. This allows a significantly shorter case (2.580 inches vs. 2.850 inches) that still holds enough powder to push 300-grain bullets to 2,550–2,600 fps from a 23-inch barrel. That's .375 H&H territory without the belt, without the over-length action, and without the feeding problems that can plague belted magnums in some aftermarket platforms.
For Oregon and Pacific Northwest hunters, the .375 Ruger is a compelling choice for black bear, elk in heavy timber, and as a backup rifle on guided hunts for dangerous game elsewhere. It's also an excellent reloading cartridge — brass is available from Hornady and Nosler, components are plentiful, and it responds well to careful load development.
Brass and Case Prep
Hornady produces the majority of .375 Ruger brass and it's high quality, consistent, and widely available. Nosler Custom brass is an excellent premium option for precision work. New brass should be neck-sized and annealed before the first firing if you want maximum case life, though many shooters simply full-length resize and fire-form on the first shot.
- Trim length: SAAMI trim-to is 2.570 inches. Trim when cases measure 2.580 inches or longer.
- Primer pocket: Use a consistent primer pocket uniformer before first use — Hornady brass occasionally has slightly variable pocket depth that can affect primer seating feel.
- Annealing: Recommended every 3–4 firings given the high operating pressures. The .375 Ruger runs at 62,000 PSI SAAMI max, and case necks work-harden quickly.
- Full-length resize: For a hunting rifle that may be used in various conditions, full-length resize every firing for reliable feeding.
Primers
The .375 Ruger uses large rifle magnum primers across the board. The case capacity and powder charges are substantial enough that standard large rifle primers can produce inconsistent ignition, particularly with slower powders like H4831 or IMR 7828. Stick with magnum primers:
- Federal 215M: The gold standard for accuracy in large magnum cases. Consistent, reliable, and well-matched to the .375 Ruger's volume.
- CCI 250: Excellent choice, slightly harder cup than the 215M, good for semi-rough handling in hunting conditions.
- Remington 9.5M: Softer cup but excellent uniformity — a solid choice when Federal or CCI are unavailable.
Powder Selection and Load Data
The .375 Ruger works best with medium-to-slow burning powders in the H4350 to H4831 range. Faster powders can produce accuracy nodes but often sacrifice velocity and produce excessive muzzle blast. The following loads are provided as starting-point data only — always begin 10% below maximum and work up while watching for pressure signs. Verify against current published data from Hornady, Hodgdon, or Nosler before loading.
For 270-Grain Bullets (Federal Trophy Bonded, Barnes TSX, Hornady DGX)
- H4350: Start 76.0 gr / Max 82.0 gr — approx. 2,680–2,750 fps from 23-inch barrel
- RL-19: Start 77.0 gr / Max 83.0 gr — approx. 2,660–2,730 fps
- IMR 4831: Start 74.0 gr / Max 79.5 gr — approx. 2,640–2,700 fps
For 300-Grain Bullets (Hornady DGX Bonded, Swift A-Frame, Nosler Partition)
- H4831SC: Start 75.0 gr / Max 80.5 gr — approx. 2,530–2,610 fps from 23-inch barrel
- IMR 7828: Start 76.5 gr / Max 82.0 gr — approx. 2,510–2,590 fps
- RL-22: Start 77.0 gr / Max 83.0 gr — approx. 2,540–2,620 fps
Bullet Selection
Bullet choice in .375-caliber is one of the most important decisions in the loading process. For hunting, the primary considerations are controlled expansion, weight retention, and penetration on large, heavy-boned animals.
- Hornady 300 DGX Bonded: The most affordable premium option. Excellent penetration, controlled expansion, and widely available. Outstanding choice for black bear and elk.
- Swift A-Frame 300 grain: Perhaps the most reliable expanding bullet available in .375 caliber. Bonded construction with a partition-style design delivers exceptional retained weight and a wide, reliable mushroom.
- Barnes TSX 300 grain: Lead-free, all-copper construction. Outstanding penetration through heavy bone, excellent for angled shots. Requires slightly reduced powder charges compared to lead-core bullets due to bearing surface differences.
- Nosler Partition 300 grain: Time-tested reliability, good terminal performance, and excellent accuracy potential.
Accuracy Expectations
A well-tuned .375 Ruger load in a quality rifle — the Ruger Hawkeye African and the CZ 550 are both excellent platforms — should produce groups in the 0.75 to 1.25 MOA range with handloads. For dangerous game applications, 1.5 MOA or better at 100 yards is entirely sufficient. The .375 Ruger is not a target cartridge, but it is an inherently accurate one, and handloaders who invest time in case prep and seating depth optimization are frequently rewarded with sub-MOA results.
If you're running a Ruger Hawkeye in .375 Ruger, the factory freebore is generous — many bullets benefit from being seated to magazine length (3.340 inches OAL for most 300-grain bullets). Experiment with seating depth in 0.010-inch increments once you've established a working powder charge.
Closing Notes
The .375 Ruger deserves more shelf space in Oregon hunting camps than it currently occupies. It's a capable, efficient cartridge that rewards careful handloading with match-ready accuracy and enough terminal authority for anything that walks the Pacific Northwest — or anything that walks anywhere else on earth.
