Understanding the .22 Nosler
The .22 Nosler is a rebated rim cartridge — its rim is the same diameter as a standard .223/5.56 case, meaning it feeds from standard AR-15 bolt carriers. The case itself is larger in diameter than .223, which is where the additional powder capacity comes from. The key conversion from a .223 upper is simple: swap the barrel and use .22 Nosler-specific magazines (Nosler sells dedicated mags, and some standard magazines work with the larger-diameter case in certain configurations). The bolt carrier group, buffer, and lower remain unchanged.

Brass Preparation
Nosler produces high-quality .22 Nosler brass, and it's the only commercial option — you can't form it from .223 brass due to the different case diameter. New Nosler brass arrives with consistent wall thickness and tight tolerances right out of the bag, which is a real advantage when developing loads. Initial prep steps:
- Full-length resize on new brass: Nosler recommends FL sizing even on unfired cases to ensure consistent headspace in your specific chamber.
- Trim to length: Maximum case length is 1.760". Trim to 1.750" with a quality case trimmer (Giraud, Lyman, or RCBS all work well).
- Deburr and chamfer: Clean the case mouth inside and out after trimming.
- Primer pocket uniforming: Nosler brass is generally consistent from the factory, but uniforming pockets takes 0.2 seconds per case and pays off in ES/SD performance.
Brass life is excellent — expect 6 to 8 firings before case heads begin to show fatigue in bolt-gun-equivalent pressure ranges. In an AR platform with typical .22 Nosler loads, plan for 4 to 6 firings before annealing becomes beneficial.
Primer Selection
The .22 Nosler is a small rifle primer cartridge. Standard small rifle primers work well across the pressure range, but match-grade primers improve ES and SD noticeably — worth it for precision varmint shooting.
- Federal 205M: The gold standard for match .22 centerfire work. Consistent ignition, low ES.
- CCI BR-4: Excellent benchrest primer, works well in the .22 Nosler with most powders.
- Remington 7½: A slightly hotter primer useful with slower powders or in cold weather conditions (below 40°F).
Powder Selection
The .22 Nosler's larger case capacity compared to .223 means it benefits from medium-to-slow small rifle powders that can fill the case efficiently and produce consistent velocities. Avoid fast-burning powders — they'll spike pressure quickly and leave unburned powder in your bore.
- Hodgdon CFE 223: The most consistent performer across bullet weights in the .22 Nosler. Its copper fouling eraser additive is a bonus for high-volume varmint sessions. Top choice.
- Hodgdon H4350: Better known for larger cartridges, but H4350 works surprisingly well with 60- to 77-grain bullets in the .22 Nosler. Excellent temperature stability.
- Hodgdon Varget: The classic .22 centerfire powder, and it delivers solid results here. Slightly better suited to the 50- to 60-grain weight class than heavier projectiles.
- IMR 8208 XBR: Temperature-insensitive and clean-burning, this is a top choice for shooters who want consistent performance from cold Oregon mornings to hot summer afternoons.

COAL and Seating Depth
Maximum COAL for the .22 Nosler is 2.260", consistent with standard AR-15 magazine constraints. For most 55- to 62-grain varmint bullets, seating to 2.240" to 2.250" provides adequate jump for reliable cycling and good accuracy. Heavier 70- to 77-grain bullets may need to be seated closer to maximum COAL to maintain adequate powder space.
Field Performance: Oregon Varmints and Deer
For ground squirrel shooting in Oregon's high desert, the 55-grain Nosler Ballistic Tip over CFE 223 is a near-perfect combination. Expect sub-MOA groups from quality barrels at 200 yards, with effective terminal performance to 350 yards under field conditions. For deer-sized game, the 62-grain Nosler Partition or 60-grain Nosler AccuBond in the .22 Nosler meets Oregon's minimum projectile requirements — check current regulations — and delivers reliable expansion at typical hunting ranges out to 250 yards.
The .22 Nosler is not a 400-yard deer cartridge. But for what it is — a flat-shooting, high-velocity AR-platform round for varmints and close-range deer — it's genuinely excellent, and handloaders who invest time developing a node will be rewarded with outstanding consistency.
